“…Similarly, IP/(IP þ Bghi) ratio <0.2 indicates a petroleum origin, 0.2e0.5 indicates a mixed source and >0.5 indicates a biomass/coal combustion source. In addition, the ratio MPhe/Phe defined as the ratio of the sum of all the detected methylated phenanthrenes (3M-Pheþ2M-Pheþ9M-Pheþ1M-Phe) to phenanthrene was also used to complement the source identification (Barakat et al, 2011). LMW-PAHs were the contaminants at five stations (Fig.…”

“…PAHs with three or more rings have low solubility in water and low vapor pressure; these PAHs can be widely dispersed by atmospheric transport or through stream pathways, and they eventually accumulate in aquatic sediments once produced (Kolarova et al, 2005;Jiang et al, 2007). When released into aquatic environments, the PAHs bind to particles easily and are subsequently deposited in sediments because of their high hydrophobicity and weak degradation (Barakat et al, 2011). Thus, sediment often constitutes a pollutant trap and has proven to be an effective monitoring object for identifying environmental impacts .…”
