Distribution and Categorization of Left Ventricular Measurements in the General Population

Abstract: Background-Echocardiography, the dominant imaging modality for quantification of left ventricular metrics, has undergone continuing development in the past few decades. However, given the lack of population-based data, current guidelines are still based on restricted and small data sets analyzed with methods including expert opinion. This work presents empirically derived reference values from a large-scale, epidemiologic study conducted with state-of-the-art imaging technology and methods. Methods and Results… Show more

“…32 Retrospectively, we found an elevated risk for the hospitalized psoriatic patients of the Department of Dermatology, University Medical Center Mainz, compared with an age-and sex-matched populationbased sample without psoriasis from the Gutenberg Health Study 33 (P=0.0062; n=125 psoriasis patients and 375 healthy controls). The relative frequency to belong to the medium or high-risk cardiovascular risk group was higher in the hospitalized psoriasis patients than in the control group ( Figure …”

“…Although the relationship of LVM index with incident cardiovascular outcomes is continuous, in the clinical practice, the risk linked to its increase is commonly categorized according to diagnostic partition values, derived from a variety of methods [23].…”

“…Left ventricular hypertension has traditionally been determined as the upper 2.5-5 percentiles of LVM index or as mean LVM index value þ its SD in apparently healthy population-based cohorts [23]. Furthermore, diagnostic LVH thresholds have been identified according to cardiovascular outcomes in longitudinal studies by using different statistical methods: the best operating point obtained from ROC curves predicting incident cardiovascular disease; the value with the smallest probability value associated with incident cardiovascular disease; and the optimal LVM threshold identified by a general additive model plot [24].…”

“…Participants of the Gutenberg Health Study were randomly recruited to the study from government local registry offices, as described. 13 Written informed consent was obtained from all participants, and the study protocol and sampling design were approved by the local ethics committee and by the local and federal data safety commissioners. For the present investigation, a cross-sectional analysis was performed for 2806 participants of the study recruited from 2007 until 2008.…”
