An annotated checklist of the marine decapod crustaceans (excluding crabs) of the Iberian Peninsula has been compiled 50 years after the publication of “Crustáceos decápodos ibéricos” by Zariquiey Álvarez (1968). A total of 293 species belonging to 136 genera and 48 families has been recorded. This information increases by 116 species the total number reported by Zariquiey Álvarez in his posthumous work. The families with the greatest species richness are the Paguridae (28) and Palaemonidae (18). References by geographic sectors and for all species are given. The results show that 264 species are reported in the Atlantic sectors, while 178 have been found in the Mediterranean. The species richness and the differences between and within sectors are discussed; these are mainly due to the dimension of the areas, the depth ranges and the confluence of distinct water masses with a different origin and different physicochemical features. Consequently, the greatest richness of decapod species (excluding crabs) is found in the Gulf of Cádiz, with 194 species. The total number of decapods found in and around Iberian waters, including crabs, freshwater species and some new records not yet published, reaches 448.

The species composition, abundance and diversity patterns of the epibenthic megafauna and fish community from the tropical Brazilian continental margin were analysed based on 42 bottom trawls from the Campos Basin continental shelf and slope. Trawls were collected aboard R/V Gyre during autumn 2008 from depths of 13 to 2030 m. Overall, 452 species belonging to five main taxa were identified: teleosts (Actinopterygii) were represented by 196 species, crustaceans by 113 species and echinoderms by 108 species. These three groups contributed 92% to the 452 taxa. Several species (289) were recorded only once or twice, and the species accumulation curves showed no signs of being close to reaching asymptotic values. A tendency of increasing diversity and richness with depth was observed. Analysis of the trawls showed the existence of megafaunal assemblages significantly associated with depth and water mass. The shelf group (13-100 m) had subgroups associated with Coastal Water (CW) and South Atlantic Central Water (SACW). The upper-slope group (376-501 m) was found exclusively under the influence of SACW. The mid-and lower-slope group (978-2030 m) had two subgroups associated with the presence of Antarctic Intermediate Water and North Atlantic Deep Water. The 39 typifying species contributed 90% to the global similarity. Teleosts and squids greatly contributed to the within-group similarity over the shelf, while decapods, echinoids and galatheids contributed to the upper-slope assemblage. Deep-sea isopods and decapods mostly contributed to the mid-and lower-slope assemblages.

Influence of Water Masses on the Biodiversity and Biogeography of Deep-Sea Benthic Ecosystems in the North Atlantic

Circulation patterns in the North Atlantic Ocean have changed and reorganized multiple times over millions of years, influencing the biodiversity, distribution, and connectivity patterns of deep-sea species and ecosystems. In this study, we review the effects of the water mass properties (temperature, salinity, food supply, carbonate chemistry, and oxygen) on deep-sea benthic megafauna (from species to community level) and discussed in future scenarios of climate change. We focus on the key oceanic controls on deep-sea megafauna biodiversity and biogeography patterns. We place particular attention on cold-water corals and sponges, as these are ecosystem-engineering organisms that constitute vulnerable marine ecosystems (VME) with high associated biodiversity. Besides documenting the current state of the knowledge on this topic, a future scenario for water mass properties in the deep North Atlantic basin was predicted. The pace and severity of climate change in the deep-sea will vary across regions. However, predicted water mass properties showed that all regions in the North Atlantic will be exposed to multiple stressors by 2100, experiencing at least one critical change in water temperature (+2 • C), organic carbon fluxes (reduced up to 50%), ocean acidification (pH reduced up to 0.3), aragonite saturation horizon (shoaling above 1000 m) and/or reduction in dissolved oxygen (>5%). The northernmost regions of the North Atlantic will suffer the greatest impacts. Warmer and more acidic oceans will drastically reduce the suitable habitat for ecosystem-engineers, with severe consequences such as declines in population densities, even compromising their long-term survival, loss of biodiversity and reduced biogeographic distribution that might compromise connectivity at large scales. These effects can be aggravated by reductions in carbon fluxes, particularly in areas where food availability is already limited.
