Distribution and abundance of prawns in the freshwater habitats of Bangalore, South India

Abstract: Fifty three freshwater habitats located in and around Bangalore (South India) were surveyed for studying the distribution and abundance of prawns. The survey indicated that, the habitats were rich in prawn fauna, harbouring one species of Palaemonid, Macrobrachium lanchesteri (de Man) and 3 species of Atyids, Caridina nilotica (Roux) var benqalensis, Caridina rajadhari (Bouvier) and Caridina weberi var sumatrensis (de Man). Macrobrachium lanchesteri and Caridina nilotica were more widely distributed than Carid… Show more

“…In the 19th century, lack of pronounced iridescence led to the hypothesis that the colors were produced by wavelength selective scattering from single particles. Raman was the first to cast doubt on this hypothesis [6], which was later falsified by Dyck [7]. Prum et al.…”

“…Obviously, the animals tend to synchronize the larval release to the dark phase when exposed to the R Ponnucliatny, S Raoichandra Reddy and Katre Shakuntala LD cycles. However, the Atyid C. weberi is generally found in marginal/surface zones along with submerged vegetation (Anantha Raman et al 1986) and normally, light may not have a significant bearing on the timing of physiological activities of the species. Hence, even larval release is not strictly synchronized with any particular (light or dark) phase of the LD cycles.…”

“…Presently, the larval hatching behaviour of the Palaemonid, M acrobrachium lanchesteri and the Atyid, Caridina weberi, prawns have been described in relation to altered light-Clark cycles. These two species of prawns are known to coexist in local freshwater habitats, though occupying different ecological niches (Anantha Raman et al 1986). Hence, a comparative analysis of the larval hatching in the two species has been attempted.…”

“…The freshwater habitats in and around Bangalore harbour two varieties of prawns, the larger palaemonid Macrobrachium lanchesteri (de Man) and the smaller atyids, Caridina nilotica (de Man), C. weberi and C. rajadhari (Anantha Raman et al 1986). Earlier, considerable information on the effects of several abiotic and biotic factors on the food conversion and growth of M. lanchesteri and C. weberi has been reported.…”
