“…There are a few published reports on the presence of mesoscale cyclonic eddies in the Bay of La Paz [ Monreal‐Gómez et al ., ; Sánchez‐Velasco et al ., ]. The origin of the eddy has been attributed mainly to the winds in the region [ Monreal‐Gómez et al ., ].…”

“…The Bay of La Paz is located in the southeastern portion of the Baja California peninsula (Figure a) and connects with the Gulf of California through two openings: Boca Grande to the northeast and the San Lorenzo Channel in the south (Figure b). There are some previous reports on the presence of a cyclonic eddy in the Alfonso Basin where the bay has a maximum depth of 450 m. These investigations focused on the physical structure of the eddy [ Monreal‐Gómez et al ., ] and the relationship between the eddy and the larval fish assemblage [ Sánchez‐Velasco et al ., ]. In this study, we contribute the relationship between the distribution of nutrients and phytoplankton within this kind of confined cyclonic eddy in the Bay of La Paz.…”

“…The Olmstead–Tukey test determined hierarchies of the species in each larval fish habitat (dominant, frequent, constant and rare species) (e.g., [ 11 , 58 ]). This test considered the average relative abundance against the frequency of occurrence of each species [ 52 ].…”

“…The Bay of La Paz (BLPZ), located on the southwestern coast of the Gulf of California (GC) 180 km from the mouth (Fig. 1), is considered the largest bay in the Gulf of California (Sánchez-Velasco et al, 2004b). This region is also characterized by strong seasonal variability, high diversity and abundance of fish species and as a spawning area for many species of great ecological significance (Sánchez-Velasco et al, 2006) with an important presence of marine mammal populations, such as whales and dolphins.…”
