Distributed Temperature Measurement in a Self-Burning Coal Waste Pile through a GIS Open Source Desktop Application

Abstract: Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are often used to assess and monitor the environmental impacts caused by mining activities. The aim of this work was to develop a new application to produce dynamic maps for monitoring the temperature variations in a self-burning coal waste pile, under a GIS open source environment-GIS-ECOAL (freely available). The performance of the application was evaluated with distributed temperature measurements gathered in the S. Pedro da Cova (Portugal) coal waste pile. In order to… Show more

“…A specific feature of the burning coal seams is constant temperature fluctuations ( Duarte et al, 2017 ). The intensity of heat steam from underground, ambient air temperature, wind, humidity, precipitation and light can all cause temperature changes ( Wang et al, 2022 ).…”

“…There are a few generic least-cost path plugins available in QGIS, but none of them incorporates an archaeology-specific methodology, as many GIS users combine QGIS algorithms with ArcGIS tools to achieve the desired results [16][17][18]. This work objective is to automate the cost-distance modelling for SCA at archaeological sites by creating a QGIS open-source application.…”
