Distributed Storage and Service Discovery for Heterogeneous Community Network Clouds

Abstract: Community networks are decentralized communication networks built and operated by citizens, for citizens. Most users see in community networks only the possibility to gain Internet access, while we propose clouds in community networks as the real opportunity: different to the general purpose cloudbased applications offered in the Internet, community clouds would allow providing cloud-based services that are relevant for the community and that are shaped and owned by the community. It is in favour of our vision… Show more

“…Finally, taking into account the SaaS model in the context of community networks, data storage services have been sporadically deployed by enthusiastic users who wanted to share some of their content (pictures, documents, etc.) with the rest of the community [18]. In some cases, users have also enabled uploading to folders, allowing other users to upload their files for sharing with the community.…”

“…For each scenario we collected results and plotted them against the baseline values. The baseline values were obtained by running the same set of experiments on the Community-Lab infrastructure (from our groups' earlier works [7]) under the same set of configurations. This gives us the behaviour of the proposed system in terms of performance and user experience.…”

“…It coordinates the underlaying hardware layer with the software distribution layer using standard Linux tools and manages the containers and virtual machines layer. Examples of cloud management platforms that have been used in the community network cloud are OpenStack 10 , OpenNebula 11 , and Proxmox 12 . In the Intercloud, CMPs are as well at the choice of the service provider, since they operate behind the Intercloud Gateway.…”
