Distributed-queueing request update multiple access (DQRUMA) for wireless packet (ATM) networks

Abstract: In a wireless packet (ATM) network that supports an integrated mix of multimedia traffic, the channel access protocol needs to be designed such that mobiles share the limited communications bandwidth in an eficient manner: maximizing the utilization of the frequency spectrum and minimizing the delay experienced by mobiles. In this paper, we propose and study an eficient demandassignment channel access protocol, which we call DistributedQueueing Request Update Multiple Access (DQRUMA). The protocol can be used … Show more

“…The DQRUMA protocol proposed by Karol et al [7] is a well-known MAC protocol for wireless ATM. In simple terms, being an FDD protocol, DQRUMA works by dividing the uplink frame into two sections with the first section for requests contention, whereas the second section for information data transmissions.…”

“…Thus, while traditional ALOHA-type MAC protocols can handle homogeneous traffic efficiently, different techniques are needed for a wireless ATM system. As such, there are a plethora of efficient MAC protocols reported in the literature that are specially designed for wireless ATM [2]- [4], [7]- [9], [13], [14], [16]. In general, there are four aspects in characterizing these MAC protocols.…”

“…Packet reservation multiple access (PRMA) is a well-known time-division multiple access (TDMA) based protocol proposed for voice and data traffic. For CDMA-based systems, some methods have been proposed without considering time-division component [7]. Hybrid timedivision/code-division multiple-access schemes have been proposed in [8], [9].…”
