Distributed mass-balance and climate sensitivity modelling of Engabreen, Norway

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Assessing the impact of possible climate change on the water resources of glacierized areas requires a reliable model of the climate-glacier-mass-balance relationship. In this study, we simulate the mass-balance evolution of Engabreen, Norway, using a simple mass-balance model based on daily temperature and precipitation data from a nearby climate station. Ablation is calculated using a distributed temperature-index method including potential direct solar radiation, while accumulation is distributed … Show more

“…The ablation correction is calculated based on the sum of positive degree-days and the glacier melt rate calculated by Schuler and others (2005). Because the sum of positive degree-days is measured only at the glacier plateau and the glacier melt rate is calculated only for Engabreen, uncertainties are introduced.…”

“…We considered the neglect of rain to be most significant, especially during mild winters with frequent and prolonged periods of abovefreezing air temperatures. We compute rainfall using the precipitation routine of a distributed mass balance model which has previously been calibrated and applied to Engabreen, an outlet glacier of Svartisen (Schuler et al, 2005). Using the model parameters obtained in that study, we calculated the amount of rainfall in each grid cell containing winter mass balance measurements according to the distribution of precipitation and temperature by the mass balance model.…”

“…The gradient of precipitation with elevation, threshold temperature and under-catch correction are treated as model parameters that are tuned to fit available observations (e.g. Hock and Holmgren, 2005;Schuler et al, 2005;de Woul et al, 2006). This simple scheme ignores all factors other than elevation that contribute to spatial variability in precipitation.…”

“…Therefore models including representations of a combination of temperature and short-wave radiation are commonly used (e.g. Hock, 1999;Pellicciotti, et al, 2005;Schuler et al, 2005;Möller et al, 2011). …”
