Distributed control patterns for intelligent mechatronic systems

Abstract: This paper proposes a step-by-step approach for developing modular and reusable logic controllers of mechatronic systems. Following that, it presents the results of employing three distributed control methods, including master-slave, peer-to-peer and independent controllers on a pick-and-place robot as a simple showcase of implementing a distributed control system on industrial applications, using the emerged IEC 61499 standard. Moreover, it addresses possibilities and challenges of using each approach.

“…There has been much work in the past years to increase software quality and re-usability of control software, e.g., (Sünder et al, 2006;Eckert et al, 2012;Sorouri et al, 2012;Zoitl and Prähofer, 2012). The approaches mainly try to develop design patterns and improve the development of control software to achieve this.…”

“…However, it is essential for every two or more collaborating O-MIRAs to ensure that both their physical and software components match with each other. For every two communicating MIRAs, their level of authority in decision-making is defined in two communication patterns: Peer to Peer and Master-Slave [13]. These negotiation methods can be either set manually or determined through reasoning, but their correctness needs to be formally verified as was reported in [14].…”

“…It takes advantage of the IEC 61499 distributed control architecture and the IEEE 1588 precision time protocol (PTP) [19]. The proposed approach is strongly motivated by the industrial trend of developing the intelligent mechatronic component (IMC) concept [20]- [22], which can include other IMCs in complex hierarchical assemblies. Some control actions in IMCs are purely reactive (i.e., event-driven) while others constitute sequences of actions that are best described by time-schedules.…”
