Distributed acoustic sensing for reservoir monitoring with VSP

Abstract: 3D VSP has long been viewed as conceptually attractive for illuminating targets under complex overburden, both for exploration purposes and for time-lapse monitoring of reservoirs. However, the widespread use of 3D VSP has been hindered by the cost and risk of deploying geophones in a borehole, and by the limited availability of accessible wells. These hurdles are largely removed when acquiring downhole seismic with a new measurement called distributed acoustic sensing (DAS).

“…A more detailed analysis of these options can be found in (Hornman et al, 2015).  DAS 3D VSP with permanently installed fiber-optic cables offers minimally-intrusive, economical and repeatable areal coverage (Mateeva et al, 2013). Since DAS can be acquired simultaneously in many wells, a single pass of shooting on an areal grid can image a substantial portion of a field, overcoming the areal limitation of traditional VSPs.…”

“…Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) is rapidly gaining popularity in the oil and gas industry especially for Vertical Seismic Profile (VSP) imaging and for reservoir monitoring Cox et al, 2012;Mateeva et al, 2012Mateeva et al, , 2013Daley et al, 2013;Madsen et al, 2013). The advantages of DAS for borehole applications in terms of costs, the deployment mechanism, and spatial resolution make its usage attractive over conventional geophone acquisition (Lumens et al, 2013;Mateeva et al, 2013).…”

“…Generally DAS VSP can be an attractive alternative for conventional checkshots and VSPs [6]. For complex reservoirs penetrated by highly deviated wells and for full-field monitoring it can be the only feasible option [3], [5].…”
