We used a combination of stomach content and stable isotope analyses to assess the trophic interactions and feeding habits of two different salmonid species, brown trout (Salmo trutta) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in the Serrano River (Magellan and the Chilean Antarctic Region). We found a high dietary niche overlap, which was supported by Schoener's index and stable isotopes Bayesian ellipses. The diet was dominated by the amphipod Hyalella spp. in both species. Nonetheless, evidence suggests that O. mykiss has a more generalist feeding strategy than S. trutta. The dietary breadth indices and the isotopic niche area, which were broader for O. mykiss than S. trutta, supported this scenario. This study increases our understanding on the trophic relationships among these introduced trout cohabiting the river and their possible effects in freshwater ecosystems from southern Chile.

Los macroinvertebrados son organismos de gran importancia para los sistemas acuáticos. Este grupo tiene gran relevancia, ya que de ellos depende la circulación de materia orgánica autóctona provenientes de algas y alóctona proveniente de la cuenca. A la vez, son utilizados en el biomonitoreo de ríos y lagos. Teniendo en cuenta el deterioro de los sistemas acuáticos y la importancia de hacer un seguimiento de su estado, en el presente estudio se tomaron diez muestras de agua en diferentes quebradas pertenecientes a las provincias de Márquez y de Lengupá ubicadas en la Cordillera Oriental, en el costado oriental, con el fin de dar a conocer a la comunidad en general los géneros y las familias más representativos de macroinvertebrados de la zona. A la vez, se busca saber su importancia a través de su historia de vida. También se tuvieron en cuenta algunos caracteres diagnósticos que ayudan a su identificación.

The sub-Antarctic Magellanic ecoregion is one of the most pristine wilderness areas remaining on the planet, and is home to the southernmost forest ecosystems in the world, which are protected by the Cape Horn Biosphere Reserve (CHBR). In these forests, birds are the group of vertebrates with the largest number of species. However, essential aspects of the ecology and morphology of several species in this region are still understudied. These species include the White-throated treerunner (Pygarrhichas albogularis, King 1831), considered a “living fossil” as it is the only living species of the genus Pygarrhichas. In addition, this Furnariid is endemic to the temperate forests of South America. Using the 23-year database of the Long-Term Ornithological Research Program of Omora Park (54º56’S, 67º38’W), based on monthly captures and banding of forest birds, we describe the morphology, longevity, and presence of the White- throated treerunner in the CHBR. Between 2000 and 2022, 91 individuals were captured, including 29 recaptures. Based on these recaptures we determined that this species can live for at least five years. Morphometric measures showed a positive correlation between bill measures and tarsus length with both tail and wing lengths. The average weight varied for each season but not significantly. The greater presence on old-growth forests sites suggests a dependence of treerunners on large trees. This study expands the knowledge about the natural history of the White-throated treerunner, particularly about its populations inhabiting the world’s southernmost forests
