Show more

“…In America, there are only eight genera that dominate in saline basins: Heterostachys, Allenrolfea, Sarcobatus, Atriplex, Suaeda, Sarcocornia, Distichlis, and Sporobolus (Karlin 2016). In Argentina, the halophytic flora represents near to the 7% of the total vascular flora, with 673 halophytic taxa, 23% of them are endemics, with 291 genera and 64 families (Cantero et al 2016;Figueroa et al 2019). Hemicryptophytes and succulent chamephytes generally are the predominant life-forms (Cantero et al 2016;Karlin 2016).…”

“…It might have reached America long before the other American taxa of Salicornioideae during the multiple colonization events linked to the global aridification of the Oligocene, Late Miocene, and Pliocene (Kadereit et al 2006). Both genera characterize halophytic districts associated with hydrographic basins in the Dry Chaco: Del Salado, with Allenrolfea vaginata and Prosopis ruscifolia; Mar Chiquita, with Sarcocornia sp., and Salinas Grandes with Allenrolfea patagonica, Heterostachys ritteriana, and Stetsonia coryne (Ragonese and Castiglione 1970;Cabido and Zak 1999;Figueroa et al 2019). Some woody species of the Prosopis genus (Fabaceae) are also abundant elements of the saline landscape, probably adapted to dry and warm conditions since the Late Miocene, according to the fossil woods found in Pipanaco Basin (Pujana et al 2014).…”
