Distortion-product otoacoustic emissions in workers exposed to urban stressors

Abstract: The study aimed to compare the distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) with the pure-tone audiometry and to analyze the changes in participants exposed to noise. The results show a prevalence of participants with impaired DPOAEs higher than the prevalence of participants with impaired audiometries in the total sample, in men, and in outdoor workers and a prevalence of impaired DPOAEs and of impaired audiometries in men higher than in women and in outdoor workers higher than in indoor workers. The com… Show more

“…The association between hearing loss, tinnitus and occupation has been previously demonstrated [ 34 , 43 , 65 , 66 , 67 , 68 , 69 , 70 , 71 ]. The aim of this study was to survey patients with chronic tinnitus with and without a history of long-term work-related noise exposure, comparing demographic variables, tinnitus and hearing loss characteristics and self-administered questionnaire responses for tinnitus, hearing loss and hyperacusis.…”

“…However, significant associations were observed between DPOAE SNR and SNPs in KCNE1 and CAT in both ears. This observation may be attributed to the use of DPOAEs, which are more sensitive for detecting noise-induced cochlear dysfunction than behavioral hearing thresholds (67)(68)(69).…”

“…The clinical course of post-vaccine SHL can be variable, from unilateral forms to bilateral forms with an involvement that can be partial, severe and often permanent [3,4,13,25,26]. However, it is not always possible to verify to association; in a study in 2016 Baxter et al [27] analyzed all cases from 2007 to 2013 of first SHL diagnosis in a specific time interval from the administration of vaccines against tetanus, pertussis, diphtheria, varicella and inactivated influenza trivalent and did not find any significant evidence correlating the two events.…”
