“…Using fALFF, which may reflect the magnitude of neural activity 20, 21 , our findings suggested that increased strength of intrinsic brain activity occurs in extensive areas of the dorsal part of the prefrontal cortex. Furthermore, in our previous study 13 we showed that increases in resting state CBF occurred in the right lateral prefrontal cortex, potentially reflecting increasing numbers of neural components (and resulting metabolic demand), blood vessels, and increases in intrinsic neural activity.…”

“…With regard to fALFF, recent technical advances have enabled determinations of the ALFF and fALFF, which are suggested to indicate magnitudes of spontaneous neural activity during rest 2022 . Consistent with this notion, repetition rates of visual stimuli induce changes in fALFF just like it does to BOLD signals to the visual cortex 23 .…”

“…Here, we provide a brief description of these metrics and more details are presented in Supplementary Text 3. The alff metric indicates the power of low-frequency oscillations in the BOLD time series (Zang et al 2007). The normalized form, falff, further divides the alff value by the power of the entire frequency spectrum (Zou et al 2008).…”

“…We used REST software to calculate ALFF (Zang et al 2007; Song et al 2011). The time series for each voxel was first band-pass filtered (0.01–0.027 Hz for slow-5 band, and 0.027–0.073 Hz for slow-4).…”

“…Amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF), characterizing the local brain features of R-fMRI data, is one of the most frequently used approaches that quantify the regional neural synchronous activity by assessing the amplitude of power spectrum of LFO (Zang et al 2007). The ALFF analysis has been used to detect brain abnormalities in a spectrum of diseases, such as the attention-deficient hyperactivity disorder (Zang et al 2007), Alzheimer’s disease (He et al 2007), and posttraumatic stress disorder (Yin et al 2011). While resting-state PET/SPECT directly measures the metabolism of local brain areas, the ALFF measures the deviation of the BOLD signal and may provide extra information about how disease affects brain.…”
