In the context of cancer, the hypothesis that EMT and mesenchymal‐to‐epithelial transition (MET) drive the invasion–metastasis cascade (Thiery, ) has been pursued enthusiastically for over a decade (Hartwell et al ., ; Jung et al ., ; Mani et al ., ; Ocaña et al ., ; Onder et al ., ; Spaderna et al ., ; Stankic et al ., ; Tsai et al ., ; Yang et al ., ), but recent studies have questioned the indispensability of these transitions in establishing metastasis (Fischer et al ., ; Shamir et al ., ; Somarelli et al ., ; Zheng et al ., ).
