Distinct populations of presympathetic‐premotor neurons express orexin or melanin‐concentrating hormone in the rat lateral hypothalamus

Abstract: Orexin and melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) have been implicated in mediating a variety of different behaviors. These include sleep and wakefulness, locomotion, ingestive behaviors, and fight-or-flight response, as well as anxiety- and panic-like behaviors in rodents. Despite such diversity, all these processes require coordinated recruitment of the autonomic and somatomotor efferents. We have previously mapped the locations of presympathetic-premotor neurons (PSPMNs) in the rat brain. These putative dual-f… Show more

“…In the brain, glucose-sensitive neurons have been identified in several hindbrain sites as well as in the arcuate nucleus, the ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus, and the lateral hypothalamic/perifornical area (6,28). There is a considerable body of evidence that suggests that activation of lateral hypothalamic neurons can modulate adrenal sympathetic outflow (14,34). Thus, local neuroglucoprivation or electrical stimulation in the lateral hypothalamic area activates adrenal sympathetic outflow.…”

“…In addition to motivating feeding [273] , MCH neurons affect energy metabolism [274][275][276][277] , and their secretion is regulated by gut peptide GLP-1 [276] , leptin [277] , and β3 adrenergic stimulation [278] . Distinct presympathetic-premotor neurons in LH express both orexin and MCH [279] . Orexin-hypocretin neurotransmission elicits circadian periodicity of locomotion [280] , locomotor food seeking, and sequencing of postprandial behavioral satiety and grooming [281,282] .…”
