Distinct neurometabolic profiles are evident in the anterior cingulate of young people with major psychiatric disorders

Abstract: Currently, there are no validated neurobiological methods for distinguishing different pathophysiological pathways in young patients presenting in the early phases of major psychiatric disorders. Hence, treatments are delivered simply on the basis of their possible effects on nonspecific symptom constructs such as depression, cognitive change or psychotic symptoms. In this study, the ratios (relative to creatine) of key metabolites (N-acetyl aspartate, myoinositol, glutamate and glutathione) were measured with… Show more

“…Recent developments in MRS spectra have enabled in vivo quantification of GSH from specific brain regions [81]. Only a small handful of studies have assessed in vivo brain GSH levels by MRS in patients with CNS conditions-epilepsy [83,84], schizophrenia [85][86][87], multiple sclerosis [88,89], bipolar disorder [90,91], and mood depressive disorder [91,92]. Recent work has added to this body of work by assessing GSH levels in brains of MCI and AD patients [68,69].…”

“…As per previously published protocols (Hermens et al, 2012, participants were scanned on a 3Tesla GE Discovery MR750 MRI (GE Medical Systems, Milwaukee, WI). Firstly, a 3D sagittal whole-brain scout was undertaken for orientation and positioning of scans (TR=50ms; TE=4ms; 256matrix; no averaging, z=5mm thickness).…”

“…Accordingly, neuropsychological deficits have been proposed as endophenotypes that cut across traditional diagnostic boundaries [9]. This idea of intermediate traits spanning the major psychiatric disorders is not new, and is buttressed by findings of neurometabolic [10], neuroanatomical [11], and neurophysiological [12] factors common to major depression, bipolar disorder and psychosis. The overarching premise is that affective and psychotic disorders may exist along a continuum [13], and exploring shared dimensional features is likely to be more informative prognostically, and for the understanding of pathophysiology (e.g.…”
