Distinct N and C Cross-Feeding Networks in a Synthetic Mouse Gut Consortium

Abstract: This article maps out the cross-feeding network among 10 members of a synthetic consortium that is increasingly used as the model mouse gut microbiota. Combining metabolomics with in vitro cultivations, two dense networks of carbon and nitrogen exchange are described.

“…In this study, we employed the Oligo-Mouse-Microbiota (OMM 12 ), a widely used synthetic bacterial model community, which can be studied in vitro and in gnotobiotic mice [34][35][36] . The OMM 12 model is publicly available, adaptable, and stable 37 .…”

“…Nitrogen food web is characterized by a diverse array of species such as Clostridium, Fusobacterium, Actinomyces, and Peptostreptococci [44]. Herein, Lactobacillus abundance was inversely related to AAs, whereas bacteria belonging to Prevotellaceae and Fusobacteriaceae exhibited widespread positive associations with AAs.…”

“…This is consistent with the results of the present study, in which Muribaculum intestinale was significantly enriched after EABC2000 treatment. Muribaculum intestinale has been proven to be involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates [ 31 ] and produces propionate [ 56 ]. Propionate has physiological activities that lower cholesterol, reduce fat storage, and have anticancer and anti-inflammation [ 57 ].…”
