Distinct miRNA signatures associate with subtypes of cholangiocarcinoma from infection with the tumourigenic liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini

Abstract: We show that common histologic grades and subtypes of ICC have distinct miRNA profiles. As histological grade and subtypes are associated with ICC aggressiveness, these profiles could be used to enhance the early detection and improve the personalised treatment for ICC. These findings also suggest the involvement of specific miRNAs during ICC tumour progression and differentiation. We plan to use these insights to (a) detect these profiles in circulation and (b) conduct functional analyses to decipher the role… Show more

“…Aberrant expression of 5 miRNAs reported in this study (miRNA-3615, miRNA-342, miRNA-339, miRNA-182, and miRNA-4485) has been previously reported in relation to liver cirrhosis or HCC malignancy (29) as well as some other cancers such as lung adenocarcinoma (30) , melanoma (31) , colorectal cancer (32) (33) , gastric cancer (34) (35) , intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (36) , colon cancer (37) , and breast cancer (38) (39) . Recently Wojcicka et al employed next generation sequencing to investigate the expression of microRNA in tissue samples of HBV/HCV infected with liver cirrhosis and HCC.…”

“…Aberrant expression of miRNAs often occurs in CCA and plays critical roles in its progression [32]. Thus, it is critical to uncover the function of miRNAs in CCA and their mechanisms.…”
