Distance, dependencies, and delay in a global collaboration

Abstract: Collaborations over distance must contend with the loss of the rich, subtle interactions that co-located teams use to coordinate their work. Previous research has suggested that one consequence of this loss is that cross-site work will take longer than comparable single-site work. We use both survey data and data from the change management system to measure the extent of delay in a multi-site software development organization. We also measure site interdependence, differences in same-site and cross-site commun… Show more

“…This section presented an analytical model for a singlesite development team and performance indices for a set of scenarios, varying members expertise, the leader support and availability. It is well-known that members expertise plays an important role on the development team productivity [9], [5]. We observed in these indices a trade-off between the level of members expertise and the leader availability, that directly impacts the members productivity.…”

“…Other challenges and issues in globally distributed development have been investigated empirically; for example, the effect of time zones [17], [9], [20]; the role of development processes [11]; the impact on productivity and quality [24], [3]; the usage of contracts [23]; and the role of dispersion [25].…”

“…Moreover, changing dynamics in the workplace where work teams are primarily engaged in "intellectual teamwork" (Galegher & Kraut, 1990) increase the need to support distributed intellectual work. Other reasons globalization increases the use of distributed work include (Herbsleb, Mockus, Finholt, & Grinter, 2000):…”
