“…Since then various surgical procedures have been published, including osteotomies [2,20], cheilectomy [7,13], resection arthroplasty [18], implant arthroplasty [5,19] and arthrodesis [4,8,10,22,30,31]. Also, various methods of fixation have been described, such as small tubular compression plating [14,22,23,31], external fixation [17], compression screws [6,8,10,22,27], wire sutures [8,9], absorbable sutures [1], Herbert screws [30], Steinmann pins [15], Rush pins [28], Kirschner wires [8,10] and bone staples [21].…”

“…Decompressive osteotomies of the first metatarsal have had reported success rates in the literature ranging from 54% to 95%. 1,[15][16][17] Our satisfaction rate of 85.2% falls within this range but is higher than the 73.3% reported by Roukis in a large systematic review. 15 Our satisfaction rate overall for the cheilectomy group was 80.0%, which is lower than rates reported in other published studies.…”

“…Ronconi et al [9] demonstrated 84% of good and excellent results when a distal metatarsal osteotomy was performed to remodel the metatarsal head by modifying the rotation axis and decompressing the joint. Using this approach, they reported a net increase of 238 of range of motion.…”

“…Considering these problems, we believe this modification of a previously described osteotomy results in plantar flexion of the first ray while limiting shortening of the metatarsal length. Therefore, the simple oblique trace from the Weil-Barouk osteotomy [8] is combined with the Ronconi [9] concept of using the inclination in the horizontal plane to increase head declination. In addition, a second transverse limb has been added to control rotation and limit metatarsal shortening.…”
