Dissolved iron in the North Atlantic Ocean and Labrador Sea along the GEOVIDE section (GEOTRACES section GA01)

Abstract: <p><strong>Abstract.</strong> Dissolved Fe (DFe) samples from the GEOVIDE voyage (GEOTRACES GA01, May–June 2014) in the North Atlantic Ocean were analysed using a Sea<i>FAST</i>-picoTM coupled to an Element XR HR-ICP-MS and provided interesting insights on the Fe sources in this area. Overall, DFe concentrations ranged from 0.09 ± 0.01&#8201… Show more

“…These authors used Al as a lithogenic tracer, but here we chose to use 232 Th. Indeed, the lithogenic fractions calculated from particulate Al (PAl) concentrations were often higher than 100% in surface waters close to the margins, revealing that a fraction of the total Pal is likely in the authigenic phase (Lerner et al, 2018;Van Beueskom et al, 1997). In addition, Al being more prone to contamination was sampled with the clean rosette 240 (Gourain et al, 2019), while 232 Th used for calculation was measured in the same samples as PREEs, collected with the standard rosette.…”

“…At depth, benthic and shelf sediment resuspension (e.g. Fitzwater et al, 2000;McCave and Hall, 2002;Elrod et al, 2004;Lam and Bishop, 2008;Cullen et al, 2009;Hwang et al, 2010;Aguilar-Islas et al, 2013;Lam et al, 2015) and hydrothermal activity (Trefry et al, 1985;Elderfield and Schultz, 1996;Tagliabue et al, 2010Tagliabue et al, , 2017Lam et al, 2012) provide important amounts of particles to the water column. Moreover, authigenic particles can be produced in situ by aggregation of colloids (Bergquist et al, 2007) or oxidation processes (Bishop and Fleisher, 1987;Collier and Edmond, 1984).…”

“…The largest bloom was observed in the Labrador Sea in May 2014. Diatoms were the dominant species in the Irminger and Labrador seas and on the Greenland and Newfoundland margins during GA01 (up to 55 % of the total Chl a concentration; Tonnard et al, 2018). In the West European Basin, Chl a was lower in May and June 2014 and coccolithophorids were the dominant species in that area (Tonnard et al, 2018).…”
