A rotating disk apparatus was used to investigate the biodegradation of PAHs from non-aqueous phase liquids to solutions of Brij 35. The mass transfer of PAHs in absence of surfactant solution was not large enough to replenish the degraded PAHs. The addition of surfactant resulted in an overall enhancement of biodegradation rates compared to that observed in pure aqueous solution. This is because surfactant partition significant amount of PAHs into the bulk phase, where uptake occurs but the supply of PAHs to the aqueous phase through micellar solubilization at latter period limited biodegradation rates. It was demonstrated the relationship between biodegradation rate and surfactant dose and the mechanisms controlling the mass transfer of PAH from NAPLs. The satisfactory comparison of the experimental data with the predictions of a model, which parameters were determined from independent solubilization and dissolution experiments and based on the main assumption that the solutes must be present in the true aqueous phase to be degraded, allows us to conclude the absence of direct uptake of PAHs by bacteria.

Power consumption reduction investigations attracted the attention of enormous numbers of researchers in the past few decades due to its high academic and economic impacts. The pumping power losses during the transportation of crude oils are considered as one of the main power consuming applications due to the turbulent mode of transportation. Investigating the possible solutions for this problem is expensive and time consuming due to the large apparatuses needed to simulate the flow in real pipelines. Rotating disk apparatus (RDA) is an instrument mainly comprising a rotating disk and an electrical motor to rotate the disk, which was implemented as an efficient and economical path to simulate what can be done in pipelines through generating a controlled degree of turbulence. This technique was also used in many other scientific applications due to its dynamic mode of operation. For example, a rotating disk electrode was used in electrodeposition processes and to characterize deposition film thickness and uniformity. The rotating disk reactor was employed to investigate the reaction rate between fluids and solid surfaces. The present work evaluates the RDA from different prospective and applications in order to introduce it as an efficient research tools for future dynamic investigations.

Bioavailability of organic compounds solubilized in nonionic surfactant micelles

Whether direct availability of organic compound solubilized in nonionic surfactant micelles (bioavailability) in a bioremediation or biotransformation process is uncertain to some extent, which is partially attributed to the difficulty by direct experimental determination. In another point of view, it should be ascribed to the fuzzy concept about the solubilization of organic compound in a nonionic surfactant micelle aqueous solution. In this mini-review, the solubilization of organic compound in surfactant micelles aqueous solution is fully discussed; especially saturated solubilization and unsaturated solubilization have been emphasized. Then the current methods for estimation of bioavailability of organic compounds solubilized in micelles are introduced, in which the possible drawbacks of each method are stressed. Finally, the conclusion that organic compound solubilized in micelles is unavailable directly by microbes has been drawn and the intensification of bioremediation or biotransformation by nonionic surfactant micelle aqueous solution is contributed to enhancement of the hydrophobic organic compounds dissolution.
