Dissociation in bulimic and non-eating-disordered women

Abstract: A relationship between dissociative experiences and the eating disorders has been reported. However the nature of that link is not clearly understood. This study investigates the links between dissociation (as measured by the Dissociative Experiences Scale ‐ DES II) and eating psychopathology in a clinical group of bulimic women and a nonclinical group of undergraduates. In the nonclinical group, specific dissociative styles were found to be linked with bulimic attitudes on the Eating Attitudes Test. In the ea… Show more

“…Mean frequencies of binging and vomiting per week (diary measures) were 3.70 (SD = 2.27) and 3.45 (SD = 2.76). Again, these are very similar to the levels reported by other studies (e.g., Everill et al, 1995b). The mean scores on the YSQ subscales are shown in Table 1.…”

“…This is very similar to scores previously reported for eating disorder samples (e.g., Demitrack et al, 1990;Everill et al, 1995b;Goldner et al, 1991). The mean scores on the BITE were: Symptoms = 22.4 (SD = 4.08); and Severity = 11.2 (SD = 5.05).…”

“…A comparison of 100 female undergraduates with 26 bulimics by Everill, Waller, and McDonald (1995) indicated significant correlations between bingeing EAT and DES scores and higher dissociative scores in the bulimic group. The key variable in the link between bingeing and dissociation was absorption.…”

“…The association between emotional regulation difficulties and bulimia nervosa is based on the binging-purging cycles characteristic of this disorder, as the binging and purging episodes are seen as methods of regulating negative affect (such as depression and anxiety). Specifically, these cycles might enable a lowering of consciousness to painful mental and cognitive states (Everill, Waller & Macdonald, 1995;Heatherton & Baumeister, 1991). Bulimic patients are described as lacking a clearly defined sense of self, and subsequently they utilize their bodies as a means of self-definition and regulation.…”
