Dissemination of the Same cfr -Carrying Plasmid among Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Coagulase-Negative Staphylococcal Isolates in China

Abstract: Six cfr-harboring methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates, which belonged to the same clone of sequence type 5 (ST5)-staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec element II (SCCmec II)-spa t311, were investigated in this study. Complete sequencing of a cfr-carrying plasmid, pLRSA417, revealed an 8,487-bp fragment containing a Tn4001-like transposon, cfr, orf1, and ISEnfa4. This segment, first identified in an animal plasmid, pSS-01, was observed in several plasmids from clinical coagulase-negativ… Show more

“…This finding may implicate a recent and rapid dissemination process of cfr in MRSA strains from different food animals in China. Moreover, the prevalence of cfr in MRSA strains from humans (2.34%) was higher in the current study than that previously reported for clinical patients (0.30%) ( Cai et al, 2015 ), but lower in isolates from a teaching hospital in a different region of China (9.38%) ( Tian et al, 2014 ).…”

“…This is due to an outbreak of linezolid-resistant S. capitis infection in Zhejiang. Since the first report of linezolid resistance in methicillin-resistant coagulase negative staphylococci in the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine in 2011, linezolid resistance in human clinical isolates has become an increasing problem in China [22, 23], and the cfr -carrying plasmid has appeared in S. aureus [24]. We isolated several linezolid-resistant S. aureus strains in 2016, but not in 2015 and 2017.…”

“… 1 The first report of linezolid resistance was in a staphylococci clinical isolate in 2001. 2 Since this time, linezolid-resistant MRSA 3 6 and the linezolid-resistant CoNS strains 7 8 have been increasingly isolated from the health care setting.…”
