Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation in Acute Leukemia

Abstract: The mechanisms of hemorrhage in acute leukemias (AL) are related to the direct effect of leukemic cells infiltrating the vascular walls and affecting the blood coagulation, causing damage to the megakaryo cyte system, changes in liver function, and subsequent decrease in the synthesis of some blood coagulation factors, increase in blood fibrinolytic activity, and the disseminated intravascular coagulation 1-4 (DIC). The effects of antileukemic agents on the blood coagula tion system in patients with leukemia r… Show more

“…Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is associated with VTE and bleeding in acute promyelocytic leukemia and acute lymphoblastic leukemia. [7][8][9][10][11][12] Although DIC has also been reported in AML, no data exist on the relationship between DIC and VTE and ATE in AML patients. 7,13 We hypothesized that the presence of DIC at diagnosis of AML may contribute to the risk of both venous and arterial thrombosis in AML.…”

“…Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a common complication of acute myeloid leukemia, particularly when the malignant cells express a promyelocytic or monocytic phenotype (Guarini et al, 1985;Lisiewicz, 1988). Solid tumors are also associated with DIC, thrombo-embolic and vascular complications (Rickles and Edwards, 1983).…”

“…Since the introduction of modern che motherapy, a decrease in the number of hemorrhagic deaths in patients with acute myeloblastic or nonlymphoblastic leukemia (ANLL) has been observed [1], However, se vere hemorrhagic diathesis in the course of this disease, especially in promyelocytic subtype (APL) is still a predominant clinical fea ture.…”

“…Several reports have documented blood coagulation and fibrinolysis alterations [1][2][3][4][5]. These changes are mediated by thromboplastic substances released from blast cells.…”
