Disseminated hydatid cyst of liver and lung

Abstract: Hydatid cyst commonly affects liver followed by lung, but rarely affects both organs simultaneously. Here we presented a patient who presented with concurrent involvement of both lungs and liver. Patient presented with dyspnoea and generalised weakness with bilateral rounded opacities throughout the lung field of variable sizes. CT scan chest with contrast showed multiple rounded soft tissue density in both lungs and liver. Patient underwent mini thoracotomy which revealed multiple cystic lesions throughout lu… Show more

“…However, medical therapy is considered where patients have cysts in two or more organs and have peritoneal cysts. In the case reported by Iqbal et al in similar settings, the patient did not undergo surgery but was given medical treatment for one year [11]. The patient responded to albendazole 400 mg (two times a day) for a year, and improvement was seen both radiologically and symptomatically.…”

“…So a cough for such a prolonged duration, which was getting worse, did signal that there was some form of pressure symptoms. Therefore, the differential diagnosis included a liver abscess, primary hepatic carcinoma, tuberculosis, and metastatic carcinoma [11]. “…[16][17][18][19] In most cases, the prognosis of CPAM after resection is favorable, and some rare cases have been reported showing patients developing mucinous bronchoalveolar carcinomas after resection. [14][15][16][17][18][19] Considering the risk of malignant transformation, patients are regularly advised to follow up in 3 to 5 years. The postoperative event, in our case, was favorable, and the patient is doing well.…”

“…The absence of anomalous vascularization in our case excludes bronchopulmonary sequestration. [9][10][11][12][13][14][15] The lack of inflammatory destruction of cartilage and bronchi with squamous metaplasia ruled out the bronchogenic cyst. Esophageal duplication cyst shows an attachment to the esophageal wall.…”

“…Hydatid disease is considered a remarkable health problem worldwide, mostly endemic in developing and underdeveloped countries such as the Middle East and Africa. It is caused by the zoonotic parasite Echinococcus granulosus [1] presenting as cysts most commonly in the liver (50–80%) and lungs (10–40%) [2] . Several complications of hydatid disease of the liver may develop, one of which is formation of a hepato-pleural fistula.…”
