“…Arteriosclerosis is emphasised in 12, Marfan's syndrome once (Austin and Schaefer, 1957)' " arachnodactyly without other stigmata of Marfan's " once (McKeown, 1960), and other congenital abnormality of the wall in six (Kurrein, 1965, cases a and b ;Iglauer, Schwarz and Kroovand, 1959;Wolman, 1959 , cases a, b and c). Much significance is attributed to abnormalities of the medial muscle bundles in dissecting aneurysm of the coronary artery (Whitehead and Dunnill, 1969). In our case with systemic sclerosis (N 5578) there is widespread medial degeneration with mucin accumulation and cyst formation, paradoxically most severe in the femoral and carotid arteries where no aneurysms have occurred; the dissecting aneurysms occurred in muscular arteries close to their origins from the aorta -regions of marked rheological change.…”

“…Fibromuscular hyperplasia (Patchefsky and Paplanus, 1967) and cystic medionecrosis (Boschetti and Levine, 1958) may be associated with dissecting aneurysms in peripheral arteries and may also occur in Marfan's syndrome (Austin and Schaefer, 1957) and in pregnancy and the puerperium (Wells, 1960;Palomino, 1969). It is probable that medial degeneration played a major role in the present case; there was no evidence that other factors, such as trauma, atheroma or hypertension were of primary importance.…”
