Disruption management in the airline industry—Concepts, models and methods

Abstract: The airline industry is notably one of the success stories with respect to the use of optimization based methods and tools in planning. Both in planning of the assignment of available aircraft to flights and in crew scheduling, these methods play a major role.Plans are usually made several months prior to the actual day of operation. As a consequence, changes often occur in the period from the construction of the plan to the day of operation. Optimization tools play an important role also in handling these cha… Show more

“…Faced with rapidly growing demand in air traffic, researchers have addressed aggravating congestion problems from various perspectives [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. Airport congestion related to departing aircraft on the ground, i.e., surface congestion, is known to be a serious problem, and its relationship to airport performance has been recently investigated [8,9].…”

“…Clausen et al (2010) provide a thorough review of models and methods used in disruption management in the airline industry, including aircraft, crew, passenger and integrated recovery. They also provide an overview of model formulations of the aircraft and crew scheduling problems, as well as an overview of research within schedule robustness in airline scheduling.…”
