Dispositional Sensitivity to Befallen Injustice

Abstract: Dispositional Sensitivity to Befallen Injustice (SBI) is proposed as a new construct. A self-report questionnaire with four types of indicators (frequency, intensity of anger, intrusiveness of thoughts, punitivity) was developed for measuring SB1. Using structural equation modeling and the general rationale of multitrait-multimethod analysis, the convergent and discriminant validity of this questionnaire was investigated vis-d-vis measures for Trait

“…Justice sensitivity was first introduced as an individual difference in reactions to unfair situations by Schmitt, Neumann and Montada (1995). Three dimensions have been differentiated: sensitivity towards experienced injustice towards self (justice sensitivity as victim), towards observing others being treated unfairly (justice sensitivity as observer), and towards profiting from unfair events (justice sensitivity as perpetrator).…”

“…A crucial assumption following from our central construct states that sensitivity to befallen injustice predicts reactions to unjust or disadvantageous events better than other constructs such as trait anger or self-assertiveness. A German version of Spielberger's Anger Inventory (1988;Schwenkmezger & Hodapp, 1989) was used for measuring trait anger (TRA), anger in (ANI), anger out (ANO), and anger control (ANC).…”

“…Some social psychologists point out in their work that individuals differ not only in terms of their tolerance or sensitivity to physical stimuli, pain, uncertainty or frustration, but that their tolerance or sensitivity to the violation of moral standards or to injustice may also be diverse (Huseman, Hatfield & Miles, 1987;Lovas & Wolt, 2002;Schmitt et al, 2005). Schmitt, Neumann and Montada (1995) made a first step towards building a tool to measure justice sensitivity. The authors systematised existing knowledge about the trait, suggesting four indicators, namely the frequency of experienced injustice, intensity of anger after injustice, mental intrusiveness of injustice and punitive orientation toward the perpetrator.…”

“…The authors systematised existing knowledge about the trait, suggesting four indicators, namely the frequency of experienced injustice, intensity of anger after injustice, mental intrusiveness of injustice and punitive orientation toward the perpetrator. Schmitt et al (1995) also examined the relationship between that trait and other related characteristics, such as tolerance of frustration, inclination to react angrily towards others and oneself, trust in people, the need for control and satisfaction with life. Mohiyeddini and Schmitt (1997) discovered that students with a high level of justice sensitivity who were treated unjustly during the experiment reacted much more strongly in that situation and felt much more deprived.…”
