To the Editors of Personal Mental Health,The recent article by de Francisco Carvalho et al. (2023) provides insightful findings on the influence of antisocial personality traits on behaviors and beliefs concerning COVID-19 containment measures. This study is timely and contributes significantly to our understanding of the psychological factors influencing pandemic response. In aligning these findings with related research, it is worth considering the study by De Coninck et al. (2023), which examined how dark triad personality traits (Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy) influence perceptions of COVID-19 threat, mediated by conspiracy mentality. Their research found that while Machiavellianism and narcissism were linked to a lower perceived COVID-19 threat, psychopathy was associated with a greater perceived threat (De Coninck et al., 2023). This differential perception could be a contributing factor to the behaviors observed by de Francisco Carvalho et al. in individuals with antisocial personality traits.Furthermore, Lisa and Valachova (2023) explored dispositional employability and self-regulation in antisocial and prosocial personalities, shedding light on how these traits influence workplace behaviors, which may be reflective of broader social behaviors including responses to public health measures. Their research suggests that different personality traits, including those of the dark triad, influence employability and self-regulation, potentially affecting individuals' adherence to COVID-19 containment measures (Lisa & Valachova, 2023).Combining these perspectives, it becomes apparent that the behavioral responses to COVID-19 containment measures are complexly influenced by a range of personality traits. This intersection warrants further investigation, particularly in the context of devising effective public health strategies and communication that cater to diverse psychological profiles.Your study opens avenues for more nuanced research in understanding the behavioral science behind pandemic responses. It would be particularly interesting to explore how different cultural and socio-economic contexts might further influence these relationships.Thank you for your valuable contribution to this critical field of study.
