This article argues that plastics ought to be included under the category of ‘hazardous’ healthcare waste and suggests that health professionals should strive for alternatives as part of their mission to improve health. The focus of this paper is on replacing, rather than recycling, plastics. The rationale for this stance stems from the unbridled escalation of plastics use, the fact that few countries have significant recycling capacity, and because the process of recycling as well as the end products of recycled plastics remain hazardous to health and the environment.Issues related to incinerated plastic, plastics in single-use items, plastic blister packs and containers for medicines, as well as plastics which are unrelated to healthcare but which nevertheless make up a substantial part of general healthcare waste are discussed. Suggestions are put forward to dramatically reduce plastics in all such cases.To support needed reforms and to guide best practice for single-use plastics in particular, a call for a reliable reference source is made—similar to the Essential Medicines Lists, which would share updated information on the most problematic items in use and environmentally friendly alternatives in each case.It is argued that concerted action by health professionals to improve healthcare waste, beginning with plastics, would send much needed market signals to industry to produce environmentally-friendly products for healthcare and would likely lead to solutions for domestic waste, too.

Objective: The Saint George Hospital – University Medical Center (SGH-UMC)– in Ashrafieh, Lebanon – aims at achieving excellence in medical services by empowering the Infection Control and Prevention Department (ICPD) to maintain a healthy environment and ensure the safety of patients and medical personnel equally. In association with the University of Balamand, two interventions were employed to attempt at further ameliorating the ICPD and the patient safety. Interventions: The first intervention constitutes of a cost-benefit analysis to evaluate the possibility of substituting the use of reusable gowns with disposable ones and the second is a questionnaire allowing the evaluation of the physician satisfaction with the ICPD at SGH-UMC. Results: The cost-benefit analysis suggested that the use of reusable gowns was more cost effective than the use of disposable gowns even after taking into consideration the attributable cost of nosocomial infections. The physician’s satisfaction questionnaire highlighted the physician’s various perceptions regarding the ICPD and the infection control and prevention in the hospital and recommended some corrective actions to overcome the obstacles faced. Conclusion: The process of quality improvement requires the employment of several quality tools, identifying the problems and attempting to solve them; therefore, development and distinction can only be attained after a process of self-evaluation, troubleshooting and corrective actions.

The aim of this research is to produce a substrate that can be used for the development of protective gowns. For this purpose, a cotton-polyester blended plain weave fabric was treated with a coating paste comprising fluorocarbon and acrylic resins. The coating process parameters, which are fluorocarbon resin quantity (%), acrylic paste quantity (g m−2), and reticulation time (min), were varied by using a Box–Behnken experimental design. Textile fabric characteristics in terms of thickness (mm), coating add-on (%), air permeability (L m−2 s−1), surface hydrophobicity (mg cm), and flexural rigidity (mg cm−1) were then analyzed and discussed.
