Disposable laryngeal tube suction: Standard insertion technique versus two modified insertion techniques for patients with a simulated difficult airway
“…I am in the happy position of being able to affirm from personal experience that thiopental (or thiopentone, or pentothal as I knew it) has been used in obstetric anaesthesia since the mid-1940s if not earlier [1][2][3]. In 1947, as a graded specialist with the rank of Captain, I was stationed as the sole anaesthetist at British Military Hospital 177, Wupperthal, British Army On the Rhine.…”

“…Various techniques, such as the Esmarch maneuver (jaw thrust) and use of a stylet, have been described to facilitate insertion [1,2]. Although stylet-assisted insertion facilitates movement of the LTS-II tip around the curvature of the posterior pharynx [2], it does not ensure correct final positioning of the tip, such that ventilation or passage of a gastric tube may not be possible [3][4][5][6].…”

A standardized training concept enabled almost 1,100 rescuers to be trained in the use of an alternative airway device and to successfully implement the LTS-D into the prehospital airway management algorithm. Because the LTS-D recently became an accepted alternative to endotracheal intubation in difficult airway scenarios, the number of intubation attempts before considering an alternative airway device is steadily decreasing.
“…Alternatively, LTS-II may be malpositioned into the trachea or impinge on the pyriform sinus [1]. Schalk and colleagues [2] in their landmark article have described successful use of chin lift maneuver (Esmarch grip) performed simultaneously to lift the base of the tongue off the pharyngeal wall, opening the patient's mouth. This creates a sufficient retropharyngeal space, thereby decreasing time for successful placement.…”
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
