CO 2 -ECBM is capable of realizing CO 2 sequestration and coalbed methane (CH 4 ) production simultaneously. Practical coal seam contains H 2 O, thus significantly influencing adsorption, desorption, diffusion, and flow capability of CO 2 and CH 4 . Accordingly, the impacts of H 2 O on adsorbed CH 4 on coal displaced by CO 2 were investigated to gain a further understanding on CO 2 -ECBM. The results derived from this study indicate that the occurrence of H 2 O with coal positively relates to oxygenic functional groups and mesopores of coal. Particularly, the oxygenic functional group of the coal matrix acts as a primary adsorption site for H 2 O. The mesopore of coal is the main space for H 2 O occurrence. Furthermore, the impact of H 2 O on CO 2 adsorption on coal depends on dissolution capability and competitive adsorption of H 2 O. With respect to coal with a low H 2 O content, the dissolution of CO 2 in H 2 O is dominant at high CO 2 adsorption equilibrium pressure, thus leading to increasing CO 2 adsorption capability of coal, while the opposite trend is applicable for coal with a high H 2 O content. With regard to the displacement process, injecting CO 2 promotes desorption of adsorbed CH 4 from dry and moist-equilibrated coals. The absolute adsorption amount of CO 2 at the equilibrium state for displacement is lower than that in single-component adsorption for both dry and moisture-equilibrated coals at equilibrium pressures below 3 MPa, whereas the adverse trend exists for a high equilibrium pressure range of 3−4 MPa. Moreover, the elevated CO 2 injection pressure favors both CO 2 adsorption and CH 4 desorption on dry and moisture-equilibrated coals. The presence of H 2 O decreases the CO 2 adsorption amount and CH 4 desorption amount of the coals. Therefore, practical implementation of CO 2 -ECBM should focus on the H 2 O dependence of CO 2 sequestration and CH 4 recovery.

This chapter is divided into three main parts: (1) governing processes in multiphase multicomponent flow and reactive transport (MMF&RT), (2) mathematical and numerical approaches of MMF&RT modeling, and (3) applications with respect to CO 2 storage. Thereafter, discussion of other applications that illustrate the ability of existing methods to represent general non-ideal multicomponent gaseous systems within a wide range of temperature and pressure conditions, in addition to their possible interactions with water/brine/rock, are presented. GOVERNING PROCESSES The governing processes and present issues of multiphase flow and geochemical modeling are introduced in this section. The definition of wettability is first presented, which is difficult for several systems; followed by the definitions of capillary pressure, residual and capillary trapping, and heterogeneity. In addition, the relative permeability is introduced, which is a characteristic property of multiphase flow. Recently, novel experimental and numerical technologies have provided further insight into different concepts such as residual nonwetting saturation, maximum relative permeability, governing forces, hysteresis, the impact of heterogeneity, and upscaling from pore-and core-scales. The different regimes of gas diffusion are then discussed in conjunction with corresponding modeling methods. Thereafter, basic formulations of multiphase flow are presented, from immiscible to compositional flows.

Coalbed methane (CBM) is an unconventional natural gas resource. CBM mining releases a large amount of coproduced water, and the trace elements of CBM coproduced water can provide a basis for the exploration and development of CBM. The contents of eight major trace elements in the produced water from wellhead were tested and analyzed based on seven CBM wells in Tiefa Basin. The research indicates that Sr and Ba are the dominant trace elements with the highest concentrations in produced water. There is a positive correlation among Li, Sr, and Rb by cluster analysis and correlation analysis, which may be affected by the total dissolved solids and pH in the groundwater. The contents of Li, Sr, and Ba increase with the burial depth of coal seam and could be influenced by the fault. The gas production of CBM wells is affected by the depth of the coal seams, and there is no significant correlation between water production and the coal seam depth. However, faults have an important impact on gas and water production. The productivity of coalbed methane is affected by hydrogeological conditions and structure because the productivity of CBM wells located in different tectonic locations varies with the change of Li, Sr, and Ba contents.
