Dispersion polymerization of acrylamide with water‐soluble chitosan as the stabilizer

Abstract: A cationic polyelectrolyte of P (CMTC‐AM‐DMC) was synthesized by dispersion polymerization in aqueous solution of ammonium chloride, with acrylamide and dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate methyl chloride as main raw materials. N‐carboxymethylthioureidochitosan was used as both the reactant and the stabilizer, and 2,2′‐azobis (2‐amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (V‐50) as the initiator. The effects of the major reaction variables such as the concentration of inorganic salt and initiator, temperature, reaction time, … Show more

“…The charge property and dynamic chain length of the stabilizer were crucial to the dispersion polymerization. 29 Gelatin was a typical polyampholyte, and pH value had great inuence on its physical and chemical properties. The effect of pH value was presented in Fig.…”

“…Therefore, the need to develop a low‐cost, effective stabilizer that is valuable in PAM wastewater treatment is urgent. At present, much more attention has been given to natural biomaterials, such as cellulose and chitosan . However, previous studies have paid little attention to gelatin, although it possesses significant potential as a perfect stabilizer.…”

“…In contrast, aqueous dispersion polymerization provides an attractive alternative to synthesize fast‐soluble and environmental‐friendly PAM. Dispersion polymerization of AM with other water‐soluble monomers in aqueous media to synthesize the cationic, anionic, and amphoteric flocculants has been extensively studied . However, to our best knowledge, the report regarding the synthesis of hydrophobically modified flocculant through aqueous dispersion copolymerization of AM with hydrophobic monomer in aqueous salt solution is still few.…”
