Dispersion of Surface and Bulk Phonon‐Polaritons on α‐Quartz Measured by Attenuated Total Reflection

Abstract: zum 85. Geburtstag gewidmet.I n a continuation of the study of surface polaritons with "stop points" on u-quartz, experimental ATR spectra for various thicknesses of the air gap between prism and a-quartz sample were@compared to theoretical ones. The relations between surface polaritons, stop points, anisotropic reststrahlen bands, longitudinal phonons, and bulk polaritons were studied. It is shown that the dispersion of bulk polaritons may be measured by ATR as well as the dispersion of surface polaritons. R,… Show more

“…There are elaborat,e theories of Raman scattering on polaritons taking into account many polar phonon bands [7]. A special case of their relationship with the isotopic impurity modes resonant interaction is the interaction of Folaritons with impurity modes in the crystal when the impurity concentration is about 1% or lower.…”

“…Outside of the hatched areas the reflectivity is much smaller. The curves and lines which surround the areas of high reflectivity in the (w, k) diagram experimentally are found by the turning points of the edges of the reflection bands [6], as is shown in Fig. 5b and c by the marks.…”

“…Because the dispersion curves are calculated without any damping this effect is not taken into account. As is shown in [15] for 8 = 0" and 6 = 90" damping can be included by calculating the reflectivity with a formula given in [16]. The dispersion curves then are defined by the minima of reflection [17].…”
