Dispersion and stability of colloidal boron carbide suspensions

Abstract: The influence of diverse types of dispersing agents on the stability of aqueous boron carbide suspensions has been investigated. The best dispersants for aqueous B4C suspensions could not be accurately determined from zeta potential and settling experiments. Rheological measurements on concentrated slurries enabled identification of the optimal concentration of each dispersant and showed that PEI cationic polyelectrolytes were most effective.

“…The sedimentation volume offers valuable insights into suspension stability: when repulsive forces prevail in a stable dispersed system, it forms a tightly packed sediment. In contrast, an aggregated suspension driven by attractive inter‐particle forces will yield a larger, less compact sediment [38] . The sediment heights formed after 4 hours reflect the sedimentation characteristics of the analysed minerals.…”

“…In contrast, an aggregated suspension driven by attractive interparticle forces will yield a larger, less compact sediment. [38] The sediment heights formed after 4 hours reflect the sedimentation characteristics of the analysed minerals. Following the addition of PEI, for kaolinite, the sediment is significantly the highest (2.8 mm), although unmodified suspensions of both kaolinite and montmorillonite produce sediments of similar height (1.4 mm).…”

“…The optimization of ceramic particle distribution within the polymer ber is crucial for enhancing the material properties. A homogeneous distribution of ceramic particles contributes to improved material characteristics, whereas an uneven distribution leads to the formation of vulnerable areas in the material [25], [26], [30], [31]. The strong compatibility observed between y ash and PAN polymeric ber facilitates the homogeneous dispersion of particles within the ber.…”

“…The distribution of ceramic particles within the polymer matrix is predominantly in uenced by the interaction between the two component phases. The agreement of the surface interaction between ceramic and polymer is primarily in uenced by two key factors: physical interactions and dispersion stability [25], [26].…”

“…The chemical functionalization of inorganic particles or boron molecular clusters (e.g., carborane) for blending with polymers is generally expensive and time-consuming, thus greatly limiting their commercialization 24 . The aqueous dispersion of B 4 C powders also requires high solid loading or an additional dispersing agent for colloidal formation 25 , 26 . Therefore, designing lightweight, shape-controllable, structurally stable B 4 C composites using a cost-effective technique and gaining detailed insight into boron distribution in the robust and flexible matrix is critical for constructing effective neutron-shielding measures.…”
