Disparities in regional productivity, capital accumulation, and efficiency across Indonesia: A club convergence approach

Abstract: This paper studies the evolution of regional disparities in labor productivity, capital accumulation, and efficiency across Indonesian provinces over the 1990-2010 period.Through the lens of a nonlinear dynamic factor model, we first test the hypothesis that all provinces would eventually converge to a common steady-state path. We reject this hypothesis and find that the provincial dynamics of labor productivity are characterized by two convergence clubs. We next evaluate the dynamics of the proximate sources o… Show more

“…In Indonesia's context, a high degree of regional heterogeneity has been previously documented using province-level data. Moreover, it has been argued that only focusing on average patterns is likely to be incomplete at best or misleading at worst (Mendez and Kataoka, 2020). In an attempt to start documenting the degree of regional heterogeneity using district-level data of recent years, Figures 4 and 5 show the evolution of regional disparities beyond the scope of the average or median district.…”

“…This, in particular, is true when tourism and economic activities start to branch out, seeking for lower‐price alternatives. Furthermore, as Figure 2 suggests, low‐performing regions are not spatial isolates, in which knowledge spillovers, as coined in Mendez and Kataoka (2020), can be sought to push for improvements. In such a scenario, the lower‐performing regions can seek the nearest better‐performing ones for technological reference.…”

“…Regional inequality is a fundamental problem for developing countries, including Indonesia (Mendez & Kataoka, 2021). Indonesia's economy during 2015-2019 is still concentrated on Java Island.…”
