A seventeen-month-old draft horse gelding was presented with acute abdominal bleeding following castration. After two blood transfusions and medical treatment, clinical parameters stabilized, and the horse seemed to recover. Four days after admission, the horse suddenly developed tachycardia, tachypnea and pyrexia. Electrocardiography revealed paroxysmal monomorphic ventricular tachycardia related to myocardial injury. The horse recovered progressively after medical treatment and returned to normal sinus rhythm. In this case report, the importance to monitor for myocardial injury and cardiac arrhythmias after acute hemorrhage is highlighted.

Os hemocomponentes vêm sendo utilizados na medicina equina em casos de emergência, internações nos hospitais veterinários e até nos atendimentos a campo, salvando diversas vidas e auxiliando no tratamento de anemias, hipoproteinemias, falhas de transferência de imunidade passiva e distúrbios de coagulação. O conhecimento sobre a transfusão sanguínea e utilização dos hemocomponentes é de extrema importância para o médico veterinário, processo que envolve várias etapas como seleção dos doadores, seleção do tipo de hemocomponente, coleta de sangue, monitoramento de reações transfusionais e dos tipos sanguíneos. Esse conhecimento gera maior segurança nas transfusões para o paciente e para o veterinário que utiliza. Esta revisão de literatura reúne os cuidados e indicações dos diferentes tipos de hemocomponentes que podem ser usados na medicina equina.

“…The two genera Babesia and Theileria infect a wide range of wild and domestic animals and include species with high clinical and economical relevance (Storey‐Lewis et al 2018). Among these, equine piroplasmosis (EP), an acute, sub‐acute, or chronic disease of horses, donkeys, mules, and zebras, is a tick‐borne disease caused by the two species Babesia caballi and Theileria equi (Babesia equi till 1998) (De Waal 1992, Mehlhorn and Schein 1998, Dunkel 2018). EP has a great economic impact, being one of the major constraints to the international movement of horses, causing important economic losses (Friedhoff et al 1990).…”

Babesia caballi and Theileria equi are widely recognized as causative agents of equine pirolasmosis (EP), an acute, sub‐acute, and chronic disease of equines, with relevant economic impact on horse trade worldwide. Although several studies on EP prevalence from central Italy have been published, data on ticks responsible for its transmission are still lacking. In this study, we identified a potential competent vector, investigating main features of its ecology together with EP infection rates. A two‐year sampling of questing ticks was carried out for the first time in Italy in an area known for high EP prevalence in horse sera, detecting the association between Rhipicephalus bursa and causative agents of EP. Most of the positive pools harbored a single infection (91.1%); mixed infections were also detected (8.9%). The infection rate for T. equi slightly decreased among years; B. caballi showed a lower, but increasing, infection rate. Tick phenology, climate variables, and peaks of EP prevalence indicated late May and second half of June as periods with the highest risk of new infections, especially during warm and dry days.
