Disorder, critical currents, and vortex pinning energies in isovalently substituted BaFe2(As1xP

Abstract: We present a comprehensive overview of vortex pinning in single crystals of the isovalently substituted iron-based superconductor BaFe2(As1−xPx)2, a material that qualifies as an archetypical clean superconductor, containing only sparse strong point-like pins [in the sense of C.J. van der Beek et al., Phys. Rev. B 66, 024523 (2002)]. Widely varying critical current values for nominally similar compositions show that flux pinning is of extrinsic origin. Vortex configurations, imaged using the Bitter decoration … Show more

“…So far, some groups reported the existence of the SMP effect [67,68] whereas other groups reported the its absence [28,47]. In the latter cases, the MHLs were measured only in fields up to µ0H = 2 T. According to the present results it is difficult to observe the SMP effect below 2 T, which may be the reason for the apparent discrepancy.…”

“…(6) As for the doping dependence of Jc, existing results are controversial. For example, (i) the doping dependence of Jc follows the doping dependence of superconducting transition temperature (Tc) (for Co-Ba122 [30]), (ii) Jc does not follow Tc and becomes highest at the under-doped region (for Co-Ba122 [40] and K-Ba122 [46]), and (iii) Jc is determined by some extrinsic factors rather than by the doping concentration (for P-Ba122 [47]). At this moment consensus has not been settled yet.…”

“…Conversely, if is known, hNV can be extracted. In our analysis, we set 200 nm based on previous measurements 40,41 , which yields hNV = 330 nm to most closely fit the data in Fig. 5a,b.…”

“…Namely, the Tc and ξ in BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 are exceptionally sensitive to the stoichiometry 16 , such that these variations demarcate phase-separated regions that are effective pinning sites. These regions are spaced roughly 100 nm apart 15 , therefore, outnumber the vortices in fields less than . This is analogous to pinning in Sm1+xBa2-xCu3Oy (Sm123) films, in which Sm-rich123 precipitates of lower Tc than the Sm123 matrix are effective pinning centers 17 .…”
