Disorder Averaging and its UV (Dis)Contents

Jonathan J. Heckman,
Andrew P. Turner,
Xingyang Yu

Abstract: We present a stringy realization of quantum field theory ensembles in D ≤ 4 spacetime dimensions, thus realizing a disorder averaging over coupling constants. When each member of the ensemble is a conformal field theory with a standard semi-classical holographic dual of the same radius, the resulting bulk can be interpreted as a single asymptotically Anti-de Sitter space geometry with a distribution of boundary components joined by wormhole configurations, as dictated by the Hartle-Hawking wave function. “…Of course it is a very special kind of subgroup, since it sits inside a P SL(2, R) subgroup of the full isometry group. 16 We can think of the full geometry as obtained by starting with the boundary at θ = −π/2 and rotating about the y = 0 axis until we reach the other boundary at θ = +π/2. Just as above, our wormhole can be thought of as a fundamental domain in H 3 with its sides identified by the action of Γ.…”

“…The role of the ensemble average in the gravitational path integral is still not well-understood and there are many conceptual issues related to this problem, such as the factorization puzzle (see e.g. [45][46][47][48][49][50] and references therein). It is believed that the Rényi entropy is a self-averaging quantity [13].…”
