Anaerobic digestion (AD) is an economical and effective method to treat sludge. AD with several pretreatments is the prior process to treat surplus sludge for a wastewater treatment plant. During a sludge-treatment process, various methanogens play their specific role in each sludge-processing stage where different methanogens predominate. Therefore, an expert in the shift of methanogen community could facilitate the workers in a plant to understand the efficiency of the sludge-treatment process. In this paper, a membership-fusing model is established to characterize the shift of methanogen community in a three-stage sludge-treatment process. The introduction of fuzzy sets clarifies the vagueness of the methanogen community structure between two processing stages. Dempster–Shafer (DS) evidence theory effectively alleviates the data error generated among paralleling samples. The accuracy of the model was verified, and the result shows the model could clearly distinguish the methanogen community structure of the three stages and make accurate judgment on the processing stage affiliation. The reliability of the model in dealing with different numbers of conflict data was proved and the experiment indicates the model could make a reliable judgment on the processing stage affiliation by reasonably fusing the interference data.

An evaluation of the energy and economic performance of thermal hydrolysis technologies is carried out on a theoretical basis. The wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) of Burgos (Spain) was the base scenario of this evaluation. Energy and mass balances were established considering the registered data of primary and secondary thickened sludge in the WWTP for 2011 to 2016. These balances were analysed considering five different scenarios, taking as Scenario 1, the plant operating with conventional mesophilic digestion. The scenarios considered commercially available technologies. The best results were obtained when hydrolysis was applied to digested sludge and sludge from the Solidstream® process. These two scenarios showed the best performance regarding volatile solid removal and lower demand for live steam, achieving a higher amount of biogas available for valorisation using combined heat and power (CHP) units. The main advantage of the hydrolysis process is the decrease in the volume of digesters and the amount of dewatered sludge needing final disposal. The Solidstream® process allowed a 35% increase in biogas available for engines and a 23% increase in electricity production.

High energy consumption is an important issue affecting the operation and development of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). This paper seeks energy-saving opportunities from three aspects: energy application, process optimization, and performance evaluation. Moreover, effective energy-saving can be achieved from the perspective of energy supply and recovery by using green energy technologies, including wastewater and sludge energy recovery technologies. System optimization and control is used to reduce unnecessary energy consumption in operation. Reasonable indexes and methods can help researchers evaluate the application value of energy-saving technology. Some demonstration WWTPs even can achieve energy self-sufficiency by using these energy conservation technologies. Besides, this paper introduces the challenges faced by the wastewater treatment industry and some emerging energy-saving technologies. The work can give engineers some suggestions about reducing energy consumption from comprehensive perspectives.
