“…Similar to our results, mortality percentage of Tribolium castaneum increased as power level and exposure times were increased, thus 100% mortality was attained at 500 watt for an exposure time of 28 s and at 400 watt for an exposure time of 56 s [33]. Also [17] studied the disinfestations of stored dates from red flour beetle via utilizing the microwave oven operating at 4 power levels 180, 300, 600 and 800 watt for 3 exposure times 20, 30 and 40 s. After microwave treatment the survivorship of the species was 100% at 180 watt and the survival rate decreased to zero at 800 watt and the exposure time of 40s.…”

“…On the other hand, the lethal concentration 50 of red flour beetle were (1123.73, 882.53 and 518.40) when subjected to the thermal energy within the same period of times (10, 30 and 50 seconds) respectively. In recent years, microwave energies were investigated as an alternative to methyl bromide fumigation and other chemicals due to its effectiveness in controlling major pests inside dried agricultural commodities [17]. Besides, microwave heat treatments have been proposed in order to achieve mortality in insects at shorter period of time instead of the conventional heating method that characterise by slow heating rates over a long period of time.…”

“…In 2011, Oman exported 7,171 mt of dates, which is only 2.6 % of the total production for that year. The low level of exports was attributed to the poor handling of dates, poor fruit quality, and the numerous pests and diseases that affect postharvested dates in Oman (Al-Marshudi 2002 ;Al-Yahyai 2007 ;Manickavasagan et al 2013 ). Compared to other countries, Omani dates fetched a lower price in the international market (USD 102 per mt), while countries of limited production such as Tunisia attained four times the price (USD 418 per mt) of dates (Mbaga et al 2011 ).…”

“…Dried dates are stored in plastic or wood containers. Due to poor conditions, dates are also infested during storage (Manickavasagan et al 2013 ). A recent study showed that dates can be frozen at the khalal stage for up to a year, with little effect on the chemical composition of the fruit (Al-Yahyai and Al-Kharusi 2012a ).…”
