The purpose of this study was to check the efficacy of household microwave oven irradiation in disinfection of dental gypsum casts obtained from patients. Impressions of upper arch of 10 volunteers were made using irreversible hydrocolloid. The casts were poured in type III gypsum. All casts were cut into two halves. One half of each cast was irradiated in a microwave oven , set at 650 W for a total of 3 minutes and the un-irradiated half was used as control. Suspension of casts was inoculated directly on Tryptone Soya Agar plates (TSA) by spread plate method. The inoculated plates were incubated aerobically at 32°C for 48 hours. Colonies grown on the agar plates were counted using a plate count reader. The data is presented as CFU/cast. It was concluded that three minutes microwave irradiation at 650 W is effective to reduce the microbial load of dental casts. Routine use of microwave for disinfection of cast could be recommended and used in between procedures to prevent cross contamination in the dental clinics.

ÖzetEnfeksiyöz mikroorganizmaların hasta, hekim ve yardımcı personel arasındaki geçişi çapraz enfeksiyon olarak tanımlanır. Protetik diş tedavisinde kullanılan materyaller ve uygulamalar nedeniyle, protez uzmanları, hemşireler ve diş teknisyenleri, hastalardan bulaşabilecek birçok enfeksiyonla karşı karşıya kalmaktadır. Protetik işlemler sırasında hasta ağzından alınan ölçü maddelerinin dezenfekte edilmeden laboratuvara gönderilmesi klinik ile laboratuvar arasında çapraz kontaminasyona neden olur. Kontaminasyonun önlenebilmesi amacıyla, hastalardan alınan ölçülerin dezenfekte edilerek teknisyenlere iletilmesi önerilmektedir. Ancak kullanılacak dezenfeksiyon materyali ve yöntemleri, ölçü materyalinin özelliklerini etkileyebilmektedir. Bu derlemenin amacı, ölçülerin dezenfeksiyonu ve dezenfektanların ölçü üzerindeki etkilerinin, konu ile ilgili yapılan çalışmaların ışığında incelenmesidir. Anahtar Kelimeler: Dezenfeksiyon, dental ölçü materyalleri, çapraz kontaminasyon, boyutsal stabilite Abstract The transfer of infectious microorganisms between patient, doctor and auxiliary staff is called 'cross infection'. Due to the applications and materials used in prosthetic treatments, prosthodontists, nurses and dental technicians come up against several infections which can be transmitted from patients. The delivery of dental impressions, obtained from patients during prosthetic applications, without disinfection leads to cross contamination between clinic and dental laboratory. To prevent contamination, disinfection of dental impressions is recommended. However, disinfection methods and disinfectants can affect the characteristics of dental impression materials. The aim of this paper is to review the disinfection of dental impressions and the effects of disinfectants on dental impressions in the light of previous studies.Keywords: Disinfection, dental impression materials, cross-contamination, dimentional stability GİRİŞ Ağız ortamı ve tükürük, mikrobiyal popülasyonun çeşitliliği açısından vücudun en zengin bölgelerinden biridir ve kontaminasyon açısından büyük bir potansiyele sahiptir. Ağız ve diş hastalıklarının tedavilerinde kullanılan airatör spreyleri, döner aletlerin sıçrattığı materyaller, hastanın ortama karışan kanı, ağızda her zaman bulunan tükürük, kullanılan aletlerin kesici ve batıcı olması nedeniyle, diş hekimleri ve yardımcı personel hastadan bulaşabilecek hastalıklar açısından en büyük risk gruplarından birini oluşturmaktadır.
