Forty-seven species of flies have been reliably associated with filthy conditions that might allow the spread of foodborne pathogens. These are categorized as "filth flies." Of that 47, only 21 species represent a potential threat to human health as scientifically proven causative agents of foodborne myiasis or as carriers of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Shigella, and other foodborne pathogens. These 21 species are categorized as "disease-causing flies" based on strict scientific criteria. The criteria are association with E. coli, Salmonella, AND Shigella; synanthropy; endophily; communicative behavior; attraction to both excrement and food products; and recognition by authorities as a potential health hazard. Within Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point and other U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulatory frameworks, disease-causing flies are contributing factors to the spread of foodborne disease that require preventive and corrective actions as appropriate under Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures, Good Manufacturing Practices, or pest control programs.

To quantify the potential capability of transporting and passing infective pathogens of some blowflies (Diptera: Calliphoridae), Mihályi's danger-index (p < 0.10; D = 4.28, 4.44 and 5.66 respectively) and C. megacephala, C. vicina and P. sericata appear to represent the heaviest potential sanitary risk with the highest index value (p < 0.10; D = 15.54, 16.88 and 12.49 respectively).Key words: sanitary entomology -disease transmission -Argentina Many flies, particularly those linked to the human settlements, are important disease vectors (Brown 1997, Chavasse et al. 1999, Graczyk et al. 1999, Fischer et al. 2001. The blowflies (Diptera: Calliphoridae) are important vectors in the transmission of many pathogenes of human and domestic animals (Greenberg 1971).Passive transport was demostrated for eggs of Taenia sp., Entamoeba coli, Giardia lamblia (Mariluis et al. 1989), Mycobacterium paratuberculosis and so on (Fischer et al. 2001). Also the participation of the Calliphoridae flies in myiasis (Guimarães et al. 1983, Leclerq 1990, Guimarães & Papavero 1999, Kumarasinghe et al. 2000, Costamagna et al. 2002 is of interest to sanitary entomologists.Around the middle of the last century, some researchers proposed to quantify and discriminate the communicativity of mature flies. Gregor and Povolny (1958) made a sharp distinction in the communication and noncommunication in synanthropic flies, and Nuorteva (1963) proposed to express numerically the synanthropy degree by means of the synanthropic index (SI).The SI ranges between +100 and -100, the former representing the highest degree of synanthropy. Negative values indicate avoidance of man.Mihályi (1967) did not consider the SI sufficiently informative, in a sanitary sense, and for this reason he makes up a "danger-index" keeping in mind three aspects of the behavioural and morphological characteristics of the insect vectors: the undergoing infection, the passing infection and body size of the vector.The idea of a direct relationship between body size and the capability of contamination and transmission of pathogens seem to be supported by several researches around the world (Mariluis et al. 1989, Brown 1997, Graczyk et al. 1999, Fischer et al. 2001.The aim of this work is to quantify the potential infection and transmission of pathogenes of some blowflies species from Buenos Aires province (Argentina) using the Mihályi's index. In addition, a modification to the original equation of the Danger-Index is proposed in order to insert into the index information on the synanthropy of the species.The taxocoenoses of Calliphoridae in Hudson (34º45'S, 58º25'W), province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, was studied from 1993 to 1995 (Centeno 2002). Quince de las treinta y una Enfermedades de Declaración Obligatoria en España, exceptuando las de tipo congénito o neonatal, pueden ser transmitidas por diversas especies de artrópodos que están presentes en nuestro país. Decenas de bacterias, hongos, virus y protozoos tienen en diversos órdenes de artrópodos a sus agentes transmisores ideales. Este hecho hace que sea necesario conocer su biología para poder adoptar medidas de control que sean eficaces y nos permitan disminuir la incidencia de estas enfermedades. Sin embargo, los estudios epidemiológicos, lejos de quedar únicamente restringidos a las enfermedades que presentan ciclos activos de transmisión en nuestro país, deben adquirir una visión más global, en la que se incluyan también enfermedades alóctonas pero con una elevada probabilidad de que se transmitan a nuestro territorio en el contexto de globalización en el que nos hallamos. De este modo se conseguirá conocer qué factores impiden su presencia actual y dotar a la Red Nacional de Vigilancia Epidemioló-gica de una capacidad predictiva que permita pronosticar la posible llegada de la enfermedad, fortaleciendo a fin de cuentas la Salud Pública española. El objetivo del presente trabajo es llevar a cabo una revisión de la artropodofauna de interés vectorial en España. Se discute la situación actual en nuestro país de algunas de las enfermedades más importantes con transmisión vectorial, así como los factores que pueden determinar su aparición, resurgencia y/o recrudecimiento. El estudio de estos agentes en nuestra Salud Pública resulta imprescindible como un elemento más articulado en la compleja red que toda enfermedad de tipo vectorial conlleva.Palabras clave: Artrópodos. ABSTRACT Arthropods With Vectorial Interest in Spanish Public HealthFifteen of the thirty-one Obligatory Communicable Diseases in Spain, exempting those of congenital or neonatal types, can be transmitted by several species of arthropods that are present in our country. Several arthropod orders are the suitable transmitters of tens of bacteria, fungi, virus and protozoa. This fact demands a through of the biology knowledge of these vectors in order to adopt efficient control measures that allow us to reduce the incidence levels of these diseases. Nevertheless, the epidemiological studies shouldn't remain only restricted to the diseases with active transmission cycles in our country. It is necessary to acquire a global vision because of allochton diseases that are perfectly extensible to our territory in the globalization context in which we are situated.
