Disease Burden in Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) Patients Who Have Secondary Osteoarthritis (OA) Is Lower Than In Primary OA But Higher Than In RA With No Secondary OA

Abstract: comorbidity count and self-rated health. As the tetrachoric correlations among the expectations ranged from 0.11e0.60, they were modeled as individual predictors. Results: The sample mean age was 65 years; 65% were female; and, 66% had >high school education. The mean comorbidity count was 1.6 (sd¼1.3) and depression was 5.3 (sd¼3.5). 40% rated their overall health as very good/excellent. The mean pre-surgery pain, function and high demand activities scores were 47.8 (sd¼17.8), 50.3 (sd¼18.5) and 59.2 (sd¼11.0… Show more

“…Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA) are two of the most prevalent forms of arthritis and can lead to chronic disability. They may exhibit common etiologies and clinical manifestations [1,2]. The quality of life can diminish significantly in patients with these diseases, which can impose high socioeconomic burdens on the family of the patient as well as society [3].…”

“…RA and OA are the most common forms of degenerative joint diseases. They are the leading cause of chronic disability and may exhibit common clinical etiology (23,24). However, there remains a paucity of studies investigating the sensitivity and specificity of detection indicators for identification of the two diseases, particularly for patients with advanced-stage RA or OA.…”

“…However, there remains a paucity of studies investigating the sensitivity and specificity of detection indicators for identification of the two diseases, particularly for patients with advanced-stage RA or OA. Recently, epigenetic dysregulation of cartilage genes has been demonstrated to have an important role in RA and OA development (24). Despite advances in the field, biomarkers associated with the pathogenesis and progression of RA and OA are not well characterized.…”
