Calls for transformations are clear and multiple pathways and alternative visions for the future have been defined. Yet, there is very little shared understanding of how such transformations come about and how knowledge-action gaps will be filled. This Special Feature focuses on how we can go beyond talking about transformation—the “blah blah blah”—and moving toward action for results. It does so by distinguishing between the means of transformation and the manner of transformation, two key dimensions to answering the question of “how.” The means can be understood as the many solutions, technical and practical methods, or actions that are presented as significant to transformative change. The manner, in contrast, represents the ways in which something is done, i.e., ways of acting. It describes the core values, principles, qualities, and relationships that not only underpin and motivate transformative change, but shape the process. Integrating rather than conflating the means and the manner is important to better understand how transformations come about. We then present insights from the collection of papers that focus on the “how” of transformation. The papers describe different ways of integrating the means and the manner in transformation processes. We have organized them thematically as follows: papers that draw on the integration of meaning making, the integration of learning and listening, and the integration of different ways of being and becoming. Drawing on both science and alternative ways of knowing, they weave together new narratives and stories about nature, society, and the future, inviting us to embark on the journey of creating sustainability pathways.

Transformation studies lean towards the more practical aspects of change processes and are not yet dealing adequately with their personal and political dimensions. They are arguably constrained in doing so in their current stances, either fixated on systems and how to control them or on individualistic values and behaviours. In this study we show the range of actually-occurring societal transformations that people face can be usefully approached through a combination of dialogical sense-making and critical phenomenology. While distinct, these approaches share a concern with experience and meaning-making, concerns which are often neglected when societal transformation becomes abstracted and alienated from people’s lives. The two approaches reveal how societal transformational change is situated, shared, embodied and laden with diverse meanings. Dialogical sense-making expands the theorisation of the experiential, personal and political dimensions of transformation and shows how the practical dimension of change is always personal and political. Critical phenomenology addresses how the experience of transformation help shape subjectivity, as a lived relation to the world, and sheds light on taken-for-granted, lived norms about bodies and transformative change. Drawing together the three spheres of transformation – the practical, personal, and political - allows a fuller grasp of the complexity in which new worlds may emerge. Through a discussion of insights from these approaches, we develop a language and framework to understand how people interact with change processes. This development allows new questions about transformative change, based on a reframing of transformations that brings them closer to people’s lives. Together these approaches broaden and deepen social-science and humanities contributions to transformation studies and sustainability science.

Purpose. To develop the main directions of industrial recovery as a necessary stage for the formation of a sustainable economy in the postwar period. To develop tools and approaches to rebuild war-torn industries. Methodology. Methods used are: abstraction and critical analysis in forming the theme and purpose of the work; content analysis for analytical review of the literature; ascent from the abstract to the concrete to form an algorithm for developing a strategy for reconstruction; analysis and synthesis to analyze the amount of losses; idealization and formalization to formulate directions of industrial recovery; system analysis to form a project approach to reconstruction; comparative analysis to stratify the losses of industries. Findings. The amount of losses of the mining and metallurgical industry is analyzed and it is pointed out that the reason was not only physical destruction, but also the forced closure of enterprises. Assessment of the amount of assistance by its types is performed, which allowed estimating the approximate amount and direction of assistance for recovery in the postwar period. It is noted that the main task in the process of recovery of industries is their deep modernization and introduction of the latest technologies into the production cycle, which will create the preconditions for a sustainable economy. Originality. It is stated that a single strategic development program is needed to restore the work of industrial infrastructure. The solution of tactical tasks should be consistent with the strategic program. To implement the program and the tasks of a sustainable economy, an Algorithm for developing a strategy for economic reconstruction has been developed. To increase the efficiency of reconstruction industries, use of the project approach is proposed. Projects must be implemented in accordance with the single strategic development program. Practical value. The main directions of industrial recovery with the emphasis on its reform are formulated and recommendations on tools and approaches of implementing the strategic program of industrial reconstruction are given.
