Medvednica is an inselberg in NW Croatia, which lies at the in ter sec tion be tween the Southeastern Alps, Northwestern Dinarides and Tisza Mega-Unit of the Pannonian Ba sin. Due to the Pliocene-Quaternary N-S di rected short en ing, Mt. Medvednica ex pe ri enced 1500-2000 m of dif fer en tial up lift and now ex poses pre-Neo gene and Neo gene tec tonic and stratigraphic units that are sur rounded by Pliocene-Quaternary sed i ments. This pa per eval u ates a set of quan ti ta tive morphometry meth ods used to iden tify tec toni cally ac tive ar eas within this re gion characterized by low-rate ac tive fold ing and fault ing dur ing the Pliocene-Quaternary. Our anal y sis em ployed ex trac tion of hypsometric curves, cal cu la tion of a hypsometric in te gral, asym me try fac tor, and sta tis ti cal pa ram e ters of lon gi tu di nal stream pro files along 36 drain age bas ins de lin eated from a 25 m res o lu tion DEM of Mt. Medvednica area. De spite lithological het er o ge ne ity of the study area, the morphometric pa ram e ters we ob tain are good in di ca tors for dis crim i nat ing tec toni cally ac tive from in ac tive ar eas. We in terpret that the most tec toni cally ac tive ar eas are lo cated at the SW cor ner and in the cen tral part of Mt. Medvednica, where they are likely re lated to the North Medvednica Bound ary Fault, and to the Kašina Fault, re spec tively. The lat ter di vides the range into dis tinct NE and SW mor pho log i cal and struc tural ar eas.

Over 50% of Western Hemisphere shorebird species are in decline due to ongoing habitat loss and degradation. In some regions of high wetland loss, shorebirds are heavily reliant on a core network of remaining human-managed wetlands during migration journeys in the spring and fall. While most refuges have been designed and managed to match the habitat needs of waterfowl, shorebirds typically require much shallower water (<10 cm deep). Traditional static habitat modeling approaches at relatively coarse spatial and temporal resolution are insufficient to capture dynamic changes within this narrow water depth range. Our objectives were to (1) develop a method to quantify shallow water habitat distributions in inland non-tidal wetlands, and (2) to assess how water management practices affect the amount of shorebird habitat in Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge Complex. We produced water depth distributions and modeled optimal habitat (<10 cm deep) within 23 managed wetlands using high-resolution topography and fixed-point water depth records. We also demonstrated that habitat availability, specifically suitable water depth ranges, can be tracked from satellite imagery and high-resolution topography. We found that wetlands with lower topographic roughness may have a higher potential to provide shorebird habitat and that strategically reducing water levels could increase habitat extent. Over 50% of the wetlands measured provided optimal habitat across <10% of their area at the peak of migration in early April, and most provided a brief duration of shallow water habitat. Reducing water volumes could increase the proportion of optimal habitat by 1-1,678% (mean = 294%) compared to actual volumes measured at peak spring migration in 2016. For wetlands with a high habitat potential, beginning wetland drawdown earlier and extending drawdown time could dramatically improve habitat conditions at the peak of shorebird migration. Our approach can be adapted to track dynamic hydrologic changes at broader spatial scales as additional high-resolution topographic (e.g., lidar, drone imagery photogrammetry) and optical remote sensing data (e.g., planet imagery, drone photography) become available.

Quantitative tectonic geomorphic study from bedrock rivers of the Fold and Thrust Belt in the Bengal Basin

Research on the Bengal Basin, the most important sedimentary basin in the world that supports ~200 million people, is primarily focused on its geologic evolution and anthropogenic effects, yet the basin is poorly studied in terms of geomorphic response to tectonic activity. The eastern part of the Bengal Basin is characterized by the Chittagong Tripura Fold Belt (CTFB) and the Indo‐Burman Range (IBR), which have structurally deformed into a series of mostly compressional fold and thrust belts including strike–slip faults because of the ongoing subduction‐related convergence between the Eurasian Plate and the Indian Plate. A network of river channels incising through thick sedimentary rocks and crossing and/or flowing parallel to this fold and thrust Belt. The active tectonic deformation caused by the structures and ongoing compression‐related activity remains enigmatic due to the sparse dataset, thick vegetation cover, outcrop paucity, and the Basin's complex geology. In this paper, we investigate river response to ongoing tectonics in the CTFB and western IBR by analysing channel geomorphic metrics (ksn, χ, and knickpoints) coupled with river profile forms derived from 30 m resolution NASADEM. Our results reveal (1) several convex and double‐concave reaches of major rivers and their tributaries that primarily indicate the transient state of the rivers; (2) a total of 219 upstream propagating knickpoints including distinct knickzones in profile reaches, suggesting river profile adjustment; (3) two different ksn zones in the CTFB and IBR with high ksn zone to the east and low ksn zone to the west, where ksn values range from 0 to 4905. These zones are thought to be associated with the differential uplift rate of the two east‐dipping thrust fault systems, the Kaladan Fault and Chittagong Cox's Bazar Fault (CCF); and (4) the χ‐ map (values ranging from 0.47 to 19,631.75) shows an occasional transient state of drainage divides where divides are migrating to the east, west, and north‐east, and χ versus elevation plots exhibiting disequilibrium state of the rivers suggesting that these drainage basins are likely adjusting with tectonic activities. Thus, our empirical observation suggests that the major rivers and their tributaries are in a transient state related to the region's overall ongoing tectonics.
