“…1 Assessing the extent of discrimination in the housing market is of particular interest not only because discrimination can be inherently unjust, but also because housing and neighborhoods are key determinants of individuals' opportunities (Chetty et al, 2016;Chetty and Hendren, 2018;Bergman et al, 2019;Chyn, 2018). Despite its relevance, causal evidence on discrimination against LGBTQ+ people in the housing market is restricted to a few countries in Europe and North America-e.g., Sweden , Germany (Mazziotta et al, 2015), Serbia (Koehler et al, 2018), Ireland (Ahuja and Lyons, 2019), Portugal (Gouveia et al, 2020), Canada (Lauster and Easterbrook, 2011), and the United States (Friedman et al, 2013;Levy et al, 2017;Murchie and Pang, 2018;Schwegman, 2018;Hellyer, 2021). This paper aims to reduce this lack of knowledge by assessing the extent of discrimination against homosexual and transgender individuals in rental housing markets in four Latin American countries: Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.…”

“…Similarly, Uslaner (2011 [208]) reassessed Putnam's findings and showed that the spatial segregation of diversity is responsible for lower bonding and bridging capital across (sets of) US cities and world countries. Spatial segregation in particular seemed to have driven re-considerations of findings on the effects of cultural and ethnic diversity on socio-economic outcomes (Khovanova-Rubicondo and Pinelli, 2012 [209]). For instance, Alesina and Zhuravskaya (2011 [210]) showed that it is the spatial segregation of diversity and not diversity per se that leads to increased instability, lower quality of regulation and weaker rules of law across 90 countries.…”

“…Overall, according to Khovanova-Rubicondo (2009[211]), it could appear that, framed within efficient institutions, diversity may indeed serve as a valuable asset for society. In particular, democratic institutions and a tolerant environment that allow differences to express themselves and interact freely seem pre-conditions for reaping the benefits of diversity (Khovanova-Rubicondo and Pinelli, 2012 [209]). Tolerance and appreciation of diversity are key values that can be imparted to students within education and by inclusive education systems in particular.…”

“…Altonji and Blank (1999) provide an early overview and discussion of this literature.5 Studies have also examined LGB discrimination in other settings, such as adoptions(Mackenzie-Liu et al., 2020).6 Field experiments on housing discrimination confirm the presence of pervasive differential treatment of individuals presumed to be sexual minorities. For example,Koehler et al (2018) conduct a "mystery shopper" rental housing study in Serbia where individuals sought apartments and differed only in whether they were in a same-sex or different-sex relationship. Journal of Policy Analysis and Management DOI: 10.1002/pam Published on behalf of the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management…”
